Chapter twenty-three

Agatha Shadewell, Present Day

Some of Agatha’s furniture refinishing tools were at the seniors’ center and some were out in the barn. She kept a box in the truck and even some tools scattered around the house as she and Martin worked to finish the renovation. Each of her tools resided where it was most likely to be needed.

Of course, she couldn’t recall exactly where she’d left the carbide scraper. Was it out in the barn with the old furniture? She often worked out there. Or had she taken it to the seniors’ center to help Pearl, the volunteer receptionist, refinish her mother’s curio cabinet?

Agatha checked the truck and house first, since those were closest. Cecil followed on her heels, suspicion radiating off him like cheap cologne from a teenager. Martin accompanied them, too, but Agatha figured his hip was acting up when he suggested, “I’ll check the seniors’ center. You check the barn.”

Not wanting to leave the crime scene, Cecil assigned Jada to escort Agatha to the corrugated iron barn. Agatha missed Chance’s company on the walk but was grateful her little dog hadn’t been with Chuck when the murderer came calling. She shuddered to think what could have happened. She’d already had one murderer threaten her dog and hoped she’d never have that experience again.

Jada asked to be brought up to date on the case, so Agatha told her everything, sparing no detail. Agatha trusted Jada and felt she owed the young police officer, since Jada had once risked her job to save Agatha and Chance. Besides, the only thing that had happened that didn’t paint Martin and Agatha in a good light was that they hadn’t immediately reported Phyllis’s presence, and she’d already copped to that. She did leave out the part about Phyllis’s powerful charisma. That sounded a bit too woo-woo, although Agatha imagined there must be a scientific explanation. What was the saying attributed to sci-fi writer Isaac Asimov? Something about advanced technology being indistinguishable from magic? She’d certainly seen some things in her own lifetime that would have seemed like magic to her dad. Even some of her peers at the seniors’ center refused to believe AI was real They’d had a security expert in who explained how voices could be cloned, but even after Mrs. Garshewitz had realized she’d been scammed, she still insisted she’d been speaking to her grandson.

Wrapping up her impromptu report, Agatha concluded, “And red dye went everywhere. An eggbeater, can you imagine?”

“What’s an eggbeater?” asked Jada. “Is it like the carbide thingie? For furniture refinishing?”

Jada was in her late twenties. Agatha sighed, feeling old. “It’s a hand-held blender. You turn a crank, and it spins the blades.”

Jada’s forehead creased. “So how do you plug it in?”

Having reached the Quonset barn, they stopped before the person-size door, ignoring the truck-size roll-up entrance next to it. “Maybe you could google it,” Agatha suggested as she dug the keys out of her pocket.
